Pernis commissions 40,000 m³ tank pit at Terneuzen

The new pit adds independent containment and twenty-four simultaneous road-loading positions, lifting Sluiskil throughput capacity by roughly a third.
The final tank in the new Sluiskil pit passed hydrostatic testing last week, closing out an eighteen-month build that adds 40,000 m³ of segregated capacity to the North Sea Port terminal.
The pit is arranged as four independent containment zones, so a release in one system cannot migrate into its neighbours. Each zone carries its own bund lining, leak detection loop, and sump pump, and the whole installation sits behind a new road-loading gantry rated for twenty-four simultaneous operations.
Commercial director Piet Bakker said the investment was driven by customer demand rather than speculation. "We had oleochemical customers queuing for segregated capacity that we simply did not have. This pit is contracted before it is commissioned, which is the only way we commit capital of this size."
The terminal now holds 44 tanks and 410,000 m³. Commissioning of the loading gantry is scheduled across the next two months, phased so that existing road traffic is not disrupted.
